Quilt Blocks Across America

At first glance, this book is somewhat intimidating. It's fun to look through but I was a little taken aback by the size and scope of the projects in the book. That was until I started at the beginning and began to read Debra's instructions.

Debra's style is fun and engaging. She keeps everything light and to the point. All the instructions are clear and concise with just a few words. She breaks down her technique; gives general instructions covering her technique, as well as fusing and embellishments. Taking the reader and quilter further, she explains how to make the process easier if you need to work with larger pieces. She offers recommendations for how to make the states that you pick feel more like how you've experienced those states. There's a section on backgrounds, ways to use specialty fabrics to achieve unique results, how to piece by the numbers, even how to print smaller sections onto fabric. It's paint by number only with fabric!

But this book goes further. Debra covers cutting supplies, thread types, needle sizes, sewing machine types, machine embroidery and raw edge sewing techniques, etc. Walking the quilter step by step through the entire process. Suddenly, I was no longer intimidated and couldn't wait to get started.

This is one of those pattern books that you'll keep coming back to again and again. There is a wealth of information and Debra encourages you to use your creativity to depict her patterns anyway that you see fit. I like to do embroidery and I though that these blocks would translate really well into crayon colored blocks on muslin fabric with embroidery outlines. However you choose to make these blocks, you'll enjoy the process and you definitely need a copy of this in your quilt library.

Elena Urioste and Michael Brown . . . What a concert! Who would have thought that classical music could be so hip and happening? After hearing Elena and Michael play, I am now a huge fan of classical music.

These two performers play with a passion I haven't seen in quite a while. While they play, they get lost in the music and it's hard to tell the music from the performer. The two are so tied up together. The pieces that they chose to play had such a deep emtional quality and I think that the way the performers played them further enhanced those emotional qualities. At times I could feel the hairs on my arm stand up, or I'd get a chill down my back, or a tear in my eye; and I know when that happens I'm hearing something extraordinary.

Both these performers are in their 20's but they are so professional, they play with such mastery, that they seem much older, more worldly. Both Elena and Michael have traveled the world and have been in many competitions, here and abroad. They've also played with symphonies, big and small; well-known and unknown.

During the interview, before I saw their show, Elena mentioned several ways to bring a younger audience into an appreciation of classical music. One idea that stood out for me was to have classical music playing in the background at after work mixers at coffee shops or bars, anywhere people gather. Many times you'll hear rock or jazz or country music playing, why not classical music. This would be a way to bring classical music to a more diverse audience.

Definately check out their individual websites and hear them play. Their websites are listed on the links page. If you get a chance to hear them, do just that. You won't be sorry. They play with depth and feeling.

I am an embroidery fanatic plus I love fabric and this book combines both of my loves in one volume.

Random shapes are cut out of a variety of different fabrics, solids and patterns, by hand, and then assembled into projects of your choice. You can follow the pattern shapes or add and subtract those shapes that you want. Everything is fused into place and then the fun begins. Highlighting and accenting the shapes with a variety of different colors of thread and a variety of embroidery stitches.

This is a great book for a beginner. It combines detailed instructions on selecting fabrics, color, pattern drafting, fusing, cutting, and embroidery stitches. Author, Laura Wasilowski recommends that all of us "practice random acts of fusing" everyday!

ALL NECESSARY FORCE

All Necessary Force . . . The crew from "One Rough Man" are back. Pike, Jennifer, and the rest of the special forces gang. What a great read! I love a book with a lot of action and adventure. Covert forces working behind the scenes to promote good and defeat evil, even better.

What really drew me into this book was the fact that there is a strong female lead character and she shows up at the beginning and there's a bit of a mystery as to what is going on with her. I like a strong female character who can go toe to toe with the guys. She's expected to hold her own and she does, and more. There's a relationship budding between Pike and Jennifer which I think adds so much to the story. Women tend not to read books like this because it's usually a book about a group of guys doing guy things. There usually aren't any women in the book, forget about relationships or well-developed characters. It's all about the action. This book, however, is far from that stereotype. Women will enjoy this book and if they pass it by because of the marketing of the front cover, they will be missing out on a special book.

I especially like the way that the book is written. For the most part it is written in third person, except when Pike is talking, where it switches to first person. I have never seen this device used before and I'll have to say that this form lends itself well to this book. As a reader, I felt like I was one of the characters on the mission. Being able to identify with a female lead character helped that feeling along, as well.

I haven't had a chance to read the first book, although I have seen it out on the bookstore shelves in paperback. This second book in the series, "All Necessary Force" can stand on it's own, if you haven't had a chance to read the first book, "One Rough Man". I imagine though that the story is richer, if you read them both. So now I'm going to have to backtrack and read the first one.

Check this book out if you're looking for something fast paced, a little bit different, and full of action. It's a great read.

Dwight Yoakam

Dwight Yoakam . . . I had the pleasure to see Dwight Yoakam in concert last night and he was terrific. When you enter a concert and they hand you earplugs at the door, you know this is going to be wild and loud. Once he hit the stage, the crowd let out a hollar and the show was on.

Dwight played his set clear through without a break. He sang, he did a few little jigs across the stage, and told a few jokes. Early on in his set he sang "Streets of Bakersfield" and inserted Kansas towns in place of San Francisco. He began with Hutchinson, then switched to Lawrence, then Manhattan and finally, Salina. The crowd roared when he finally got to Salina. It was pretty funny.

Later on he sang his remake of "Little Sister", an Elvis song. I know that the Elvis fans out there are going to hate me for saying this, but I believe Yaokam's remake is really more how the song should have been sung in the first place. Sorry Elvis.

Then there was Yoakam's remake of a Johnny Cash song, "Ring of Fire". I think it's a toss up there. I like both versions. Metal Mom attended the show with me and said she preferred Yoakam's rendition.

This is a flashy show with lots of shiny stage costumes, jeans, and stage lighting. There were typical country western melodies (Guitars, and Cadillacs) as well as tunes to rock out too. The ladies behind us were clearly there for the lead guitar player, Eddie Perez. They were doing shout outs to him throughout the concert.

This was nothing like what I expected. Not your typical country show. I went to a Clint Black show a while back and everyone there was dressed in typical country western gear and were what you'd think of as typical country western fans. Not so with this show. Dwight Yoakam appeals to a broader audience and it's unexpected. It was very refreshing.

Sculpture Tour-Salina Has Voted

Back in May of 2011, Salina had a Sculpture Tour, downtown, along Santa Fe Avenue. There were 20 different sculptures by a variety of different artists. The votes have finally been counted and the results are in. The winning sculpture that the City of Salina will purchase is:

This year in May, the city hosts another sculpture tour. This time there will be 25 sculptures to choose from and once again, there will be a vote. The city will then purchase the winner, and then begin, again. I can't wait to see what the sculptures will look like in May.

Late Night Catechism with Sister . . .This is a really delightful show. I don't think that the audience realized that the show is very loosely scripted and the actress: Diana Carl Alioto, is ad libbing most of the show based on crowd reaction and participation.

No matter what your religious preferences, Catholic or some other denomination, you'll love this show. Religious instruction is somewhat universal across all faiths. Most of the examples and remarks that "Sister" makes during the show regarding Catholics are fairly well known examples, so the audience gets it. Diana is a practicing Catholic and she makes sure to inform the audience up front about this fact. I don't think that those of us watching the show would have felt that same way about what she talked about had she been of another faith. When you are part of a group, it's is much easier to explain and point out the humorousness within that culture, than it is when you are on the outside looking in.

The crowd was really involved in the show and crowd reaction afterward was upbeat. Everyone had a great time. There are several incarnations of this show that are touring at the same time, all with different actresses. I'll have to say that I was very impressed with Diana Carl Alioto and I'm glad that she's the actress that brought the show to us. "Sister" and her ever present ruler will not soon be forgotten.

If you get a chance to see this show, by any actress, make sure that you do. To get the maximum benefit of the show and to be able to participate, buy your tickets early. This is not a show where you want to be in the balcony.

Mrs. Hughes

MRS. HUGHES

Mrs. Hughes . . . What a funny lady! This is one of the best comedians I've seen in a long while. Definitely an adult show, and so very funny.

Mrs. Hughes covered everything from aging to body size issues to the battle of the sexes, and just individual everyday topics that we all face. All of it done in a humorous fashion. She had the crowd laughing for a full hour, non-stop. She did tell a few jokes, but her act consisted primarily of off the cuff remarks about the issues of the day that required a bit of thought. It sounded funny when she said it and then if you thought about it for just a minute your realized that there was a whole other dimension to what she had just said and you started laughing all over again.

The theatre was packed. She had an amazing turn out. Each of those attending left the theatre this night with lots of sore ribs from all the laughing. This would include Mrs. Hughes. At one point she related an experience she had at the doctor and the sound engineer provided an echo. It was done so superbly that Mrs. Hughes started laughing and couldn't stop. It was fun to watch. Laughter is the universal language!

Ever the gracious hostess, Mrs. Hughes met everyone in the lobby afterward for a meet and greet. She provided photos of herself and she signed them individually to each person by name. What a refreshing change from the usual meet and greets. She also posed for photos, shook hands and stayed around to talk to all her fans. Mrs. Hughes is definitely a class act!

Maisie Dobbs . . .I enjoyed this book and it seemed that everyone in the group enjoyed it, too. The book is billed as a mystery and I think that is an exaggeration. This was far from a mystery book. The book was also billed as being similar to "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" and I felt their was no comparision to that series either.

If you are looking for a historical novel about a time period that few people are familiar with, World War I, than this is a terrific book to find out more about that time. If you are looking for well developed characters, this book will satisfy that need. If you want to know more about the in's and out's of British society, I recommend that you read this book. But if you're looking for mystery and intrigue? I would pass this one by and read something else.

With that being said, though, this is still a great read. It's easy to read and moves swiftly. I wouldn't say that it's a book you can't put down, but it's a unique book. It's not like anything I've ever read before. I think it will appeal to women the most but men can get a lot out of it, too. There are two men in the group and they both enjoyed the book as well. The story makes you think, not only about the actual story but about the time period. It expands your mind. I would say that's the mark of a great book.

Ryan Coon . . .I got the chance to check out Ryan Coon in concert at Metropolitan Coffee in Hutch on Saturday night. What a terrific concert! I loved the soulful way that Ryan played the guitar.

Ryan played two sets which took the concert until nearly 10:00 p.m. Generally, concerts at The Metro last about an hour and a half. So, this was a rare treat. Ryan's set consisted of mellow tunes, fast toe tappers, dreamy instrumentals, a few knee slappers, and slow thoughtful ballads. I found myself humming along, unable to sit still as I kept time to the music.

Throughout Ryan's set, he took time to explain his musical influences and where his songs come from, how he develops his tunes. He spends a lot of time playing his guitar and figuring out what he wants to say musically and then writes the actual music. Everyone has their own way of creating their art and this is working well for Ryan.

A funny, strange thing happened during Ryan's concert that I have never seen happen anywhere before. Ryan had taken a break and was well into his second set, when a fan came up into the stage area and asked to purchase a CD. I have no idea why this happened, why the fella didn't make his purchase during the break or wait until after Ryan's concert was over. Ryan was very accommodating and seemed to think nothing of it. Without missing a beat, he sold the fella the CD and went right back into finishing his set.

Ryan's concert was truly an amazing journey through his music, his art, and how his mind works. Check out Ryan Coon's music on ITunes. If you get a chance to hear Ryan in concert, make sure to do so. You are definitely in for a treat!

Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure . . .has never before been part of First Thursday Art Rush in Salina. So, when it was announced that they would be featuring their current exhibit "Birds In Art" for free to patrons of Art Rush, I beat a fast track to the Hedville exit, west of town, to view the exhibit. The gallery is halfway through the museum, so it was a double treat. I got to view the museum and the exhibit. Check out my photo's from the museum and the event.

CLINT BLACK . . . I had the opportunity to see Clint Black perform on Wednesday evening. This was a make-up show from the week before. Clint was suppose to perform on Thursday, December 8 but became ill and had to cancel. This show was worth waiting for, though.

I'm not a country music fan. I never really have been. So naturally, I was curious to see what my reaction would be to this type of music. I was familiar with Clint Black. I knew who he was, that he wore a black cowboy hat as his trademark, that he sang country music, and that he was married to Lisa Hartman. But I didn't know any of his songs and none were familiar to me as the concert began.

Clint Black and his band were impressive. Every member of his band could play multiple instruments and I could tell that this was something they took for granted. Everyone of them, including Clint, moved from instrument to instrument with such ease that you knew this had been going on for some time. Never in my life would I have thought someone in the band would have pulled out a saxophone at a country show or that at one point Clint would play the drums.

Add into this show the fact that Clint kept throwing in one liners that had the audience laughing themselves silly. He really is quite funny. Clint is funny in the way that he would say things and you'd have to think just a bit before you realized what he'd say. He's the thinking mans comic!

The place was packed with country fans and everyone knew all the words to all of his songs. True fans in every sense of the word. I had my favorites as well. "Like the Rain" is one that I dearly loved. Talk about mood music. It made me think of the prairie right before a summer rain. "Desperado", an Eagles tune, was amazing. He stayed true to the way Don Henley sang it oh so many years ago. Of course, Clint and the band got tapped for an encore. The last song of the evening, and the last song of the encore, one of Clint's band mates sang "Josie", a Steely Dan song, and also accompanied himself on the saxophone. Clint played drums on this song.

It was truly a memorable evening. I don't know if I'll become a convert to country music or not. But you never know. I sat down at my computer this morning and searched for "Like the Rain" because I just had to hear it one more time. Apparently Clint Black, country music and his tunes stayed with me long after the concert was over. That is saying something.

DARLENE KOLDENHOVEN . . . Little did I know that when we embarked upon an interview with Darlene on Saturday afternoon, that by show time, we would be filming her concert for her website. We began as interviewers and fans, and became part of the show.

Darlene is warm and welcoming. She answered all of our questions. Even after the interview was over, she answered many more questions that I had regarding some of the things that she had said during the interview. I nearly didn't ask a couple of them because I thought she might think they were dumb. But if she did, she didn't show it. She gave me in depth answers to my questions about what goes on behind the scenes at the various musical shows she has performed at and insights into various performers, ( Streisand was a topic of conversation).

Darlene's concert started out with background instrumentals and she provided the voice to the music. It was quirky and different. I had never been to a show like this and the first song she sang was a little disconcerting but after that, I can't imagine listening to her any other way. She played the piano and did some improvisational singing with sounds. Very jazz based. I love jazz, so this was part of the program was a favorite.

One of my favorite songs of the evening was a song that Darlene wrote and sang, entitled: "Infinite Voice". She has a CD with the same name. If you get a chance to hear this song, or better yet, buy the CD, do it. This is a CD that you will treasure forever, based on just this song. It should be required listening. Simply beautiful.

Other songs that really stood out for me: a trilogy of Christmas songs that she sang near the beginning of her show ("Gabriel to Mary, Weeping", "Joseph's Question", and "The Star to the Stable"), and near the end of the show: "Gabriel's Oboe" and Darlene's encore number: "Sous le dome epais". Truly, though, I enjoyed everything that she sang.

Grammy winner, singer, songwriter, author, and voice coach . . . Darlene Koldenhoven is one busy lady. Check out her website and go to her show, when she's in your area. You won't regret it. There truly is nothing like hearing her live. Her voice will resonate with you long after the concert is over.

THE CELTIC TENORS

THE CELTIC TENORS . . . Unique! These Irish lads are quite something. I knew next to nothing about this group when I did a quick interview with them before the show. They had arrived late for sound check and the interview almost didn't happen. But after talking to them before the show and then getting to hear their music? This is a group to watch.

The Celtic Tenors covered just about every musical genre, other than rap and heavy metal, in their own unique style. Primarily they sang with piano or guitar accompaniment and let their voices be their instruments. In fact, near the end of the show, they sang "Danny Boy" without instruments or microphones. The auditorium was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. And the audience . . . could hear them just fine! The range and volume of their voices were some of the strongest I've ever heard.

Each member of the group had a signature strength. Daryl smiled the entire time. He smiled through the interview, he smiled through the show, and he was still smiling at the meet and greet afterwards. Matthew kissed all the girls. He gave me and my colleague a kiss on the cheek after the interview, he blew a kiss to a female audience member during the show, and he was still hugging and kissing all the girls at the meet and greet afterwards. James was just himself. He was friendly and knowledgeable at the interview. He was friendly throughout the show and he was still very friendly at the meet and greet afterwards. We didn't get to meet Colm at the interview but we did get to talk to him extensively at the meet and greet. My colleague had on a Pantera t-shirt and Colm was very taken with it. He asked Jody, my colleague, if she had liked the show since she was heavily into metal music. He seemed stunned and confused when she overwhelming gave the show her seal of approval.

Something quite funny happened around the intermission. At the beginning of the show, Matthew had a beard. After the intermission, he did not. We were quick to notice and then eventually it was pointed out to the audience. Apparently he had orders from his wife to shave it off. The big joke of the evening was that at all their shows, he has a beard for the first half of the show and then at intermission he shaves it off!

It was a terrific show and these guys were lots of fun. Their talent is tremendous. The meet and greet after the show was the icing on the cake. Keep up the good work, fellas. I hope they travel back through Kansas again, very soon.

Changes Are Coming!

     You may have noticed a new tab at the top of my blog. A calendar. If you can't get to it, don't worry, the calendar is under construction. There will be more tabs that join the calendar tab as I go through this next year.

     There is so much entertainment in Salina and the surrounding area. I go to a fraction of the available entertainment in the area. I'm only one person and can't get to it all. I am, however, going to provide a calendar to keep everyone up to date on what's happening in the area. If you have an entertainment event that you would like listed, shoot me an email, let me know what it is and all the pertinent info. I'll get it put up on the calendar.

     Also, if you attend an event, take photo's, write a review or would just like to let others know about an entertainment experience that you've had out in the community, shoot me an email and let me know about it. I'll post it on ReVue.

GET THE LED OUT-the music of Led Zeppelin . . .the curtain came up on a stage decked out with big amps, expensive instruments, guys with long hair and tight jeans, and a big sound. This is the rock-n-roll type of show that I remember from the 1970's. Today's rock-n-roll groups just don't have the style that groups from the 1970's had. You know it's going to be a great show when they hand the audience earplugs as they enter the theater.

The music was amazing! This is a tribute band like none other. GTLO is not about re-creating the band-Led Zeppelin, but re-creating the music of this super group. The accuracy of the music is what it's all about for GTLO. The music was loud and the beat was pounding. There are over 80 songs in the Led Zeppelin repertoire which gives GTLO a vast amount of music to work with and present to the audience.

This was the first time the group has been to Kansas. The Stiefel Theatre was packed to nearly capacity. People were dancing in the seats, the aisles, and up next to the stage. There was clapping, yelling, and singing out loud along with the lyrics to the songs. Even the lights on the stage were more of the vintage variety. There were lots of blues, greens, golds, and white.

GTLO played from 8:00 to after 11:00 p.m. The audience really got their money's worth with this concert. After the concert, the band came out and signed autographs for every person that stayed to meet and talk with them. It was awesome.

Earlier in the day, during the sound check, GTLO had invited area youth to the theatre to a guitar workshop. They also played an acoustic set that was taped for KJAG Radio and interviewed with other area radio stations, too.

During one of the songs, I noticed one of the guys, Andrew Lipke, off to the side running his hands through the air creating an unusual sound. I asked him about it while I was in the meet and greet line. He said it was a Theramin. Check out this link to find out more about what a Thermin is: Theremin on Wikipedia.

This group is a class act and I can't wait for them to make a return visit. I think they should play The Stiefel Theatre every year, make it an annual event.

MARK BOWLING . . . is a singer/songwriter that I would characterize as a folk singer which immediately brings to mind another folk singer/songwriter, John Denver. The parallels are amazing! Even Mark agrees that his style is similar to that of John Denver. He didn't set out to become the next John Denver, he just fell into it.

Mark is very unassuming and has no desire to be in the spotlight. He enjoys writing songs and performing them in the privacy of his studio. His hope is to have other artists perform his songs one day. I'm not sure that other performers could do his songs justice. Mark's songs are deeply personal and reflect pieces of his life. Many songs are serious and introspective, as well as funny and lighthearted. Yet, the songs have a universal appeal.

At the time that I saw Mark perform, he had just come back from Nashville, where he had presented some of his songs to music executives. Mark and two other song writing hopefuls had presented songs. The other two writers had been sharply criticized by the music company for all sorts of different problems with their songs. Mark didn't receive any criticisms for the songs that he presented.

Truly Mark Bowling is a singer/songwriter to watch. Will Mark sell his songs and propel well-known country music artists to number one slots on the music charts? Or will he take the "John Denver" route, writing and performing his own songs as a singer/songwriter? Only the future knows for sure.

I recently received this lovely book of prayers in the mail and I just have to tell you about it.

Prayer, meditation, connection with a higher power

can provide a sense of peace and calm within one's life.

I myself, find that I pray every day, in one way or another.

It isn't always formal. Sometimes I just utter a prayer under my breath

as I go about my day.

If your like me, or if you prefer a more traditional approach,

The prayers are short, sweet and to the point.

and their prayers have been spoken there.

Many of these prayers have also been printed in the Topeka Capital Journal.

Getting prayers published in a major newspaper is no small feat.

from the cover to the inside pages.

LUKAS NELSON and PROMISE OF THE REAL . . .I didn't know what to expect going into this concert. After having read the press releases and checking out the website, I knew that Lukas Nelson's music was all over the map. He sings blues, country, rock-n-roll, jazz, etc., you name it. I couldn't imagine what I was getting into.

The lights came down, tye-dyed peace symbols appeared on the black stage curtains behind the band's instruments, the drums began, and the band took the stage as they played John Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance". I knew that this was going to be something unlike anything I had ever seen, something very special.

Lukas played original music, country (on those slow country ballads he sounds remarkably like his dad, Willie Nelson), lots of 60's cover tunes (including "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Rolling Stones), rock-n-roll, blues, etc. I enjoyed everyone. On one song, a new one, Lukas forgot the words. He tried to fake it while his bandmates just looked at him and shook their heads. Finally he gave up and said he'd come back to it later. He laughed while he explained to the audience what was going on.

I've heard a lot of cover bands play a lot of cover tunes but Lukas's cover tunes are nothing like I have ever heard. He takes a cover tune and makes it his own. On "Sympathy for the Devil" as well as a few others, it was hard to tell where the original music left off and the cover tunes began. The music was so interchangable.

The band played for two and a half hours. There were several standing ovations throughout the night. And then the show was done. Lukas and the band gave their all and I could tell that they were just about done in at the end of the night. Everyone was tired. But a final standing ovation came and the band took to the stage to play it out. They played for another thirty minutes. And the final song was the one that Lukas had tried to fake earlier in the night. I could tell they were having fun and that was communicated to the audience. No one wanted to go home.

After the performance, Lukas and Promise of the Real signed autographs and talked to those who stayed to meet the band. They signed every single thing put in front of them, talked with every single person in line and took pictures whenever they were asked. Every audience member who stayed behind to meet them was blown away. National acts just don't do this kind of PR. These guys are a class act!

Quiet Corral

QUIET CORRAL . . .Lawrence, KS. This group opened for Lukas Nelson although they were not originally part of the show on Wednesday night. Their management company called and said they were going to be on the bill. The Stiefel Theatre complied and you have an opening act.

This group definitely stands on its own. They are terrific. If you like the Beach Boys, you'll love Quiet Corral. During an interview before the concert, when their sound was compared to that of the Beach Boys, they said that they took that as the highest compliment.

I got to sit in on their sound check and it was an amazing thirty minutes. I loved every song and was looking forward to their concert. I was totally unprepared for the actual show. They performed a four-part drum solo on stage that blew me away. Needless to say, it drew a standing ovation. Unfortunately, that was also the end of their portion of the show.

I would love to see a full concert with Quiet Corral. This group is going places . . . fast. They are professional, their songs are all original and unique, and their stage performance is amazing.

DOUG MACLEOD . . .I really enjoyed meeting Doug on Friday night before Blues Masters. He was the MC on Friday night and then he played a set on Saturday. Doug has a brand new CD out called, "Brand New Eyes". Doug won a Golden Note award in 1997 for "You Can't Take My Blues".

A fan of social media, he said that the world of music reaches a world wide audience now, almost instantaneously; with FaceBook, YouTube, and ITunes. Now anyone anywhere can hear new genre's and discover talented artists that they might not have listened to or experienced without social media. However, it is now possible for anyone anywhere to also create music and if they lack talent, they can adjust their musical stylings to reflect talent that isn't there. Doug is all about honesty within the music, so he finds this a disturbing trend.

One of Doug's long time friends, Roy Head, wandered by as the interview was wrapping up.

ROY HEAD . . .is quite a character. Roy played on Friday night. He said he was going to do his thing and then vanish into the night. Roy is quite a character! Roy won a gold record in the 60's for "Treat Her Right".

"Still Treatin' Em Right" is Roy's new album. When asked if he writes his own music, he said his attorney writes his music. Then he laughed and explained that he was in a fight over music royalties with his record label and his attorney said that if Roy would record some of the songs that the attorney wrote, he would provide legal fees for free. So, Roy did just that.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to hear either of these gentlemen play during Blues Masters but it was wonderful meeting them. Check out their websites on the internet for more information and free music.

While I was at Blues Masters waiting to interview Doug, I had a chance to roam around downstairs, back stage and upstairs at the event, checking out all the activity. Upstairs there was an artist that was recording a song and the acoustics at Blue Heaven Studios are fantastic. I'm sorry that I didn't get to attend the show on Friday and Saturday night. Salina is really blessed to have this event held here every year. Check it out online for more information.

Zack Busick

ZACK BUSICK . . . I had the chance to meet Zack on Saturday night and hear him in concert at Metropolitan Coffee in Hutchinson, KS. I also got to meet his friends: Elizabeth, Jacob, and Garret who sat in on several songs.

This act had some interesting points and at the same time some interesting needs.

The show was scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and Zack breezed through the door at 8:00 p.m. He did no set up so there were no mics or PA system. He didn't introduce himself but just commenced playing. Zack had friends join him to sing but he never introduced them. Who were they and why were they singing with him? It was never clear. He brought a group of friends with him who whooped and hollared, asking him to play specific songs. The audience was not familiar with the songs. It wasn't until the last three songs that he introduced the titles and let the audience know he writes his own music. And finally on the very last song he told the audience what prompted him to write the song. He can play the guitar and can hold a melody but unfortunately the words were lost, I didn't understand a word he said. The audience didn't know when one song ended and the next began so they didn't know when to respond.

Jacob and Zack

Showing up early and setting up ahead of time would have been a good idea. Zack definitely needs to utilize a mic. He should introduce himself and give out information on where his music is available at, his performance schedule and other information. Zack needs to introduce his friends, explain why they are there. I thought this was a very unique idea, having the friends sit in and sing. This is a strength that needs to be capitalized on. I've never seen this before, it was new and different. He needs to introduce his songs and explain what prompted him to write it. He plays the guitar well enough but we need to hear the words of his song.

Zack has a lot he needs to work on. He also has some unique talents. I hope he can get this figured out and put some of these suggestions to work for him. I believe he has the talent. Zack indicated during an interview after his show that he would like to record a demo and go on tour. If he puts in the necessary work, I believe he can get to where he wants to be.

CHRISTINE PECHSTEIN . . . I had the chance to meet Christine on Saturday night and talk to her about her new book, "The 7 Day Sermon" at Metropolitan Coffee in Hutchinson, KS. Christine was conducting a book signing and meet & greet for her new book.

Christine is a life coach and the books she writes are a natural extension of how she lives her life. She takes a lot of notes on all different kinds of topics as she goes through her day. These notes form the basis for her books. Organization is key. These books are workbooks that help the reader organize their thoughts to achieve their goals. You can actually write in the books. You might say they are workbooks for your life.

"The 7 Day Sermon" is a book that helps you organize your thoughts and keep notes that are relevant to you during your Sunday church service. It serves as a way to live the lessons learned during the sermon throughout your week and chart your progress, finding parallels within your own life.

Christine has written several books, including: "Here's Your Chance to Pick My Brain" ( a collection of her Facebook and Twitter posts), "Real Life Management", "Interviewing Is An Art", "Take This Job and Chunk It", and the newest book "The 7 Day Sermon". Stephen Millard

STEPHEN MILLARD . . . I had the chance to meet Stephen on Saturday night and hear him in concert at Metropolitan Coffee in Hutchinson, KS. He was the second act of the night. He followed Crawford and Salasin.

Stephen sang and played a wide variety of very upbeat tunes. He writes his own music and he even sang a cover tune or two. He plays guitar and accentuates that with a drum beat. It's quite a unique sound. When you go to his concert and you see him setting up with a guitar and a drum, it's hard to believe that yes, he is going to play both of those instruments at the same time.

Although Stephen is a senior at McPherson High School, eighteen years old; he is putting his career together on his own terms and pushing forward going after his dream of a music career.

Currently he is on a mini tour of Kansas and Nebraska. "Tours are incredibly hard to put together. I think people think when I call that I'm just a kid and so I have to call back 5 or 6 times so they know that I'm serious", Stephen told me.

Crawford & Salasin

CRAWFORD & SALASIN . . . I had the chance to meet Crawford & Salasin on Saturday night and hear them in concert at Metropolitan Coffee in Hutchinson, KS. They were the first act of the night and played before Stephen Millard.

Crawford & Salasin played quite a few folksy type of tunes. Everything was very downbeat, quiet, and I thought the performance dragged along. It was a rainy night, the place they were playing had very subdued lighting, and cozy, but I thought the performance was lack luster. Both Crawford & Salasin can sing and play but it was disappointing that they never seemed to pull the audience together into their act. They never played anything upbeat. The music was good but didn't showcase their talent.

Lisa Salasin and Jess Crawford are both seniors at Central College in McPherson. They listed Jason Mraz as their biggest musical influence and you can see that influence in the music that they play. They have a CD out called, "A Place To Lay Your Head" and it features five of their newest songs. Both hope to move to Nashville, TN after college. Crawford & Salasin are not interested in a recording deal but simply want an environment where they can sing and play live music.

What can be said about someone who is a world class musician, who has played all over the world
in front of audiences large and small, who feels his art deeply, so deeply that he donates free downloads
of his current CD and continues on with a tour playing for free after the money has dried up?

On Friday evening, October 7, I just happened to be in the George Smith Library which really isn't a library at all but more of a venue. There were tables and chairs all around in this beautiful room with leaded glass windows and highly polished, heavy mahogany beams. Off in one corner was a bar area which was set up for a wine tasting (Sangria-a wine of Spain, among others) and included cheese, olives and a dip of some sort with tortilla chips. The tastes of Spain.

The audience consisted of both young adults and older adults, men and women, all sitting around the tables
enjoying wine and snacks, talking together. The tables and chairs provided a close interaction among the audience that just can't be duplicated when an audience sits in rows.

The sound check was first, which was as interesting as the actual show.

Then the show began.
Ron kept us all entertained with tales of his life, the history of Spain, the history of Flamenco music, Gypsy lore, lifestyle and moral lessons learned. In between all of this, he played Flamenco music. I felt like I was right there, in Spain, living among the Gypsies. He encouraged audience participation so that the audience became part of the show. He played for two hours and then it was time for an intermission.

At the intermission there was more wine and snacks. Time for the audience to talk to those that were seated at other tables. Ron signed autographs and CD's and talked to the audience on an individual basis.

Back from the break and we were all transported back to Spain. For the finale, Ron played the song that had started him off on his journey of a lifetime. It was beautiful and he played with such passion. Ron got so involved while he played that he was transported to somewhere other than the room we were all in and he took the audience along with him. To witness someone be so completely transformed and lose themselves so totally in what they were doing was awe-inspiring. There was this hush that fell across the entire room as everyone felt that same sense of transformation.
It took all of us a while to come back to the venue, back to Kansas.

Actions speak louder than words. Ron had made commitments to come to Kansas for concerts and teaching engagements which he continued to fulfill even though the money for these spots had dried up.
When I think of all of the children, teachers, school faculty, and concert goers that were able to see his performances on his tour through Kansas, plus all the others who are influenced by speaking to those attending Ron's performances, and then I think about all of these people who might have been denied this opportunity, it makes me very sad. Who knows what lives were changed simply by the exposure to the music and Ron's tales of Gypsy life, the lifestyle of Spain, and his personal history, his can-do attitude.

I know that my life was changed by attending this concert and I do not see my life the same any more.
After this concert, all I want to do is go to Spain. I think about it night and day. During Ron's last song I
could literally see the crooked, winding streets; the stucco houses perched precariously on the hillsides; the wrought iron balconies; the spontaneous parties that break out for no reason in out of the way places. I hope one day to travel to Spain and see all of this first hand. And this is something that would have been lost to me had I not had the opportunity to attend Ron's concert.

Carter Green of the MudBugs

CARTER GREEN . . .This concert was part of the autumn art ala carte series. It was the fourth concert. The third concert featured Joseph Vincelli.

This was a very entertaining lunch break. I really enjoy Zydeco music and especially if it is mixed in with other types of music. So this mix of Zydeco and Cajun influences was really something. Carter played the guitar and fiddle. He sang in French and Cajun, and English, of course. He explained about the customs of the Louisana Cajuns. He also explained about the groups name and how a "mudbug" in Cajun territory is also known as a crawfish. Not only did I get to hear some great music but I learned about the culture of the Cajuns in the Deep South.

All in all it was a wonderful break from work during the lunch hour. I really enjoyed the show. The MudBugs as a group are playing on Saturday for the Smoky Hill Museum's Street Fair. The entire band will be there with their complete Zydeco band. This event is not to be missed! The Street Fair is always a blast and hearing the MudBugs band will be a big plus.

The lunch break concert was not without its memorable moment. On the last song, Carter had just begun to play when his guitar string broke. He laughed it off and said "Well, I guess we're done".

ALEX CARTWRIGHT . . . I had the chance to meet Alex last night and hear her in concert at Metropolitan Coffee in Hutchinson, KS. What a treat!

Alex was wearing a black t-shirt which explained who she was and where she was playing Saturday night. She told the audience that before her gig on Saturday evening, Alex and her husband had taken their son to the Kansas State Fair. She decided that since she was going to be walking around at the fair she might as well advertise her performance later in the evening. She was literally a walking bill board as she walked the fairgrounds. Many people noticed and walked up to her and asked her about her shirt. No word yet as to if it attracted fans to hear her sing.

Alex is friendly and outgoing. She writes all her own songs. Alex has written a song entitled "Blanket in the Backyard" which has all the sounds of a Nashville hit. In fact, a female Nashville recording artist has expressed interest in recording this song. Here's hoping that artist comes through on her promise because if she does, Alex's star will take off in directions I'm sure she never even imagined.

If you get a chance to see Alex in concert, make sure that you go. You won't regret it. Her music is amazing.

DRU DAVIS . . .This concert was part of the autumn art ala carte series. It was the second concert. The first concert featured Bruce Lacey.

Dru's concert didn't start on time and he didn't do a sound check ahead of time, although he had plenty of time to do one. Dru should have done a sound check. His performance suffered for it. Also, he mentioned that he was going to do some new and innovative things throughout his performance. Either his interpretation of new and different is different than mine, or he changed his mind, or nothing that he did was very new or very different.

I thought the performance was a bit lackluster. It was o-kay as a break from work and a performance to serve as background music for lunch, but that's about it. Dru did play a rather upbeat song from his new CD which he is either putting together in October or will be available in October. He really wasn't clear about which option that was. The new CD will be the first with his real name on it. He didn't exactly explain as to why that was and why there were others out there with a different name. So, I wasn't really sure if he had been in a group before or what.

I'll probably check him out again, just to see if I can find out the answers to my questions. Maybe his performance will be better. Maybe he was just having a bad day.

"Moon Over Manifest" By Clare Vanderpool

"Moon Over Manifest"

I just finished reading this book and it is one of the best that I've read this year.

This is the first book that the author, Clare Vanderpool, has written and published.

It won a John Newberry Medal and is a Kansas Notable book. Quite an achievement for a first novel.

The book has many different depths. The reader wades in and gets pulled along into the deep water very quickly. The twists and turns, the unexpected revelations over the course of the book are compelling. At the center of it all, a compass.

This is marketed and cataloged as a young adult novel, but any age will enjoy this. It covers a lot of adult topics and historical information. It's very easily read. The authors notes at the end of the book were a delight. I am so glad that she included all of the additional information.

Read this book. You'll be thinking of it long after you finish reading it.

Marci keeps the crowd engaged

Every seat was full and more had to be brought in for the talk. What a great turnout!

Marci Penner has just completed a new book, "8 Wonders of Kansas Guidebook". She gave a talk and showed some slides with pictures of the eight wonders of Kansas at the Salina Public Library on Saturday afternoon. Marci kept the crowd engaged as she talked about how the various shots were set up and how she worked with the photographer to get just the right layout. I was fascinated. I also learned that photographers can be divas, so if you ever do a book with photographs it is important to pick your photographer carefully. HA! HA! Seriously, though,the photographs were well worth the effort. They were amazing.

The eight wonders of Kansas fall into the following categories: architecture, art, commerce, cuisine, customs, geography, history, people, and an overall category. Marci stated that each community in Kansas that she visited had at least one item within the community that fell into all eight categories. She believes that if you take a fresh look at your community you too will see that there is more to your town than meets the eye. It provides a fresh prospective for viewing where you live in Kansas right now.

These guidebooks are available from independent outlets all over the state. In Salina, the book is available at the Smoky Hill Museum. You can find out more about the book, where the book is available for purchase, or you can even order it directly from the Kansas Sampler website. The website is a rich resource for all things Kansas.

Marci will soon be at work on a new book which will feature all 627 towns in Kansas. Did you know that half of all Kansas towns have 400 or fewer citizens? A quarter more have only 1500 inhabitants. This means that three quarters of Kansas communities are operating with all volunteer community leaders. Folks that live in the towns are running their business' as well as running the town. It's something to think about. I believe that is a unique part of our state.

This book is a work of art. I thought the price was a bit high. But after considering all that went into it, and the look of the book, it is well worth the price. Be sure and check it out, if you get the chance.

MARQUISE KNOX . . .I will have to say I'm torn about what to say about Knox. I didn't think that this was that great of a show. Knox really didn't do it for me. There were a few in the crowd that seemed into it. Those small few were very vocal about what they were hearing. Apparently they were suitably impressed. I'm just not sure what about.

The performance for me, was lackluster. The music was O-Kay but nothing spectacular. I didn't get a chill down my back over any particular song. The music was good. Everyone in the band played well. Knox sang well. I didn't hear any off notes and the lyrics were dead on with the music. It was very polished and professional. What I didn't hear was "joy". There was nothing special. There was no sparkle. There was nothing that set it apart from any other polished and professional band.

Now, it was 100 degrees in the park, there was no air moving, the audience was hot, and I'm sure the performers on stage were extraordinarily hot; what with all the lights and sound equipment giving off extra heat. So, I'm sure that this probably produced the end result.

As you can see, I'm torn over this performance. Knox and the band were polished and professional, to a fault. They sounded good, no off-key notes. But something was missing. Perhaps Knox was just out of his element. I've never heard him at "Blues Masters". I may have to go and check that out, see if there's any difference in the performance.

You be the judge. . .go and check out Marquise Knox in concert and let me know what you think. Did I miss something spectacular? If so, what was it that I missed? Was Knox and the band having an off night due to the heat? Or is polished and professional all there is to Knox and the band?

Laura Milkins, a Tucson, Arizona resident and performance artist has not been home to Michigan to see her mother in four years. On May 1, 2011, Laura set out from Arizona and is walking to Grand Rapids, Michigan to see her mother. Along the way, Laura will stay in the homes of random people that she meets and will repay them for their kindness by fixing them supper and breakfast in their homes.

Laura says that this has not turned out quite like she expected. Universally every home she has stayed in has apologized in some way for their kitchen. Apparently no one is satisfied with the cleanliness, the decorating, the amount or type of food available, or the overall look of their kitchen. She has fixed meals for some, had her host fix meals for her, and has even been taken out to dinner at her host's favorite restaurants. The kitchens that she has been allowed to cook in have presented a challenge with regards to what she will make for dinner. She rummages through her host's kitchen cupboards, collecting a variety of ingredients and makes dinner from her finds. Laura says that several of her viewers have suggested that she publish a cookbook with the stories and recipes from the various kitchens. She is considering it.

Interaction between her and the people she meets is part of the performance art piece that she is doing. While I spoke with her, she mentioned that our interaction was part of her performance. I am now part of her performance art. How interesting! I had not thought of it quite like that before.

RIDE'N ON EMPTY . . . I have to give this band credit for one thing, they throw themselves into their music. The band has a signature look, they have a gimmick where they play "Wipe Out" and throw beach balls into the crowd, when the lights go down they light up the night with color, and they have a lot of energy. The band plays their instruments well. Deena sings like a dream.

However, put them altogether and something strange happens, they are awful. No amount of enthusiasm can make up for the fact that they just aren't very good. This band just sounds terrible. Ride'N On Empty is a cover band, they do cover tunes and those cover tunes are barely recognizable. I tried, I really did, try to find something that I liked about their music. But try as I might there was just no redeeming quality to their sound. I didn't like the songs they picked to sing and play. The music wasn't done well. It was just a sad experience.

I love the colorful lights on the drum kit. Even Deena's shoelaces light up!

THE TOM MORGAN QUARTET

TOM MORGAN QUARTET . . . I love jazz music. There is a lot of really terrific jazz music out there. Jazz has a rich and varied history. I don't think that I have ever heard a jazz piece that I didn't like. Well, that is until I heard jazz played by the Tom Morgan Quartet.

This group played jazz pieces I had never heard of by people I didn't know. Or maybe they just didn't play them well. They played a Dave Brubeck piece that was done so poorly it was literally unrecognizable. There were no up-tempo pieces during the first set. It was just ponderous. I'm not sure where one song began and the other ended. People in the audience were getting up and leaving in the middle of songs. I heard several people say, "I have a headache, let's go" and "I feel sick, I think it's time to go home now". The music was excruciating to listen too.

The drummer, and leader of the group, Tom Morgan, told some jokes at various times and his timing was just awful. The jokes were told so that it took me a few moments to figure out what he was trying to say. By the time I did, the joke wasn't funny anymore and I had lost interest.

Of course, then the band took a break. They probably should have quit then. Just called it a night, packed up and left. But they didn't. However, the audience did just that. They grabbed their coolers, folded their chairs and headed off to their cars with their loved ones. I didn't actually hear anyone squeal out of the parking lot, but it's a wonder that this didn't happen. The Tom Morgan Quartet soldiered on with a vastly diminished audience. So many people left the park that the noise level went from voices to crickets singing in the grass.

The Tom Morgan Quartet played on. No one really knows why. The audience that was left in the park was comprised of people who were too tired, to drunk or to stubborn to leave before the event was over. And the band didn't seem to understand that their services were no longer needed.

At 10 p.m. the emcee took to the stage as he always does on Thursday nights to close down the show. Usually he asks for one more song, a short encore. The sound engineer seeing the emcee on stage muttered, "Oh dear God, please do not ask for another song". Thankfully the sound engineer's prayers were answered and no encore was asked for on this night.

During their show at Art Ala Carte in May; Aaron said, "If you came late don't worry, our show is always the same".

Like the sign says, after the show it's "wreckage" among the band members.

THE SOUL PREACHERS . . . is most definitely a cover band. With that being said, The Soul Preachers are one of the best. They cover a wide range of rock music, everything from the Beatles to the present day. Most of their music seems to come from the tunes of the 60's and 70's. The band jokes around a lot while on stage and this only adds to the show. Their jokes are more of the funny strange variety rather than the funny HA! HA! variety. But hey . . .

They are very relaxed in front of a crowd and their natural showmanship pulls the audience in, so that you feel like you're just hanging out with your friends. It's just you and the band. It doesn't hurt that you could possibly see one of them around town, then just go up and start talking to them. There's just a feeling of familiarity and friendship.

The Soul Preachers played the final concert of the Art Ala Carte-spring edition, in the park on the Oakdale stage. We were a bit late getting there. Not to worry, though, as they wrapped up the concert Aaron said, "If you came late, don't worry, it's always the same show and you didn't miss a thing". Comforting thought. And I would have said the same thing at one time. But lately they have been playing a lot more tunes of different types and mixing up the order. One song they use to sing with great frequency was, "The Tax Man" but they seem to have dropped that from the line up lately.

The next time the posters go up and the word goes out that The Soul Preachers are playing in your area, make sure to hustle on over, check them out. It is well worth your time. These guys are good and they always draw a large crowd.

TRAMPLED UNDER FOOT . . .what a joy to hear this band sing and play. Watching the band perform is a pure delight. This band is polished, professional, high energy, personable, and they also happen to be family; two brothers and their sister, which would account for the fact that there are two left-handed guitarist's in the group. The Blues have never sounded so good.

TUF is currently in the running for "Blues Band of the Year" and the "Sean Costello Rising Star Award". The voting closes on August 31st. Check out the website for further details. TUF is a featured act and popular attraction on the the Tommy Castro Legendary Rhythm and Blues Revue blues cruise. TUF were the winners of the 2008 International Blues Challenge and Nick Schnebelen was honored as the 2008 Albert King award winning guitarist. TUF has a new CD out: "Wrong Side of the Blues".

The night before they played Salina, they had been playing at a bar in Kansas City. While they were inside giving their concert, someone hooked onto their trailer which contained their freshly minted new CD and their sound equipment and drove away. This is a terrible thing especially since they are just getting their start.

Even with all this going on, their performance was spectacular. If you get a chance to go and see them in concert, make it a point to check them out. They are well worth the price of admission.

THE SEASON BEGINS . . .

FORTNIGHT. . .this was probably not the right act to kick off "That's Entertainment". This group is a cover band that plays the "B" sides of cover tunes. I'm not sure if they think that this will grab the audience attention because it's music they've never heard before, if they think that people will think that this is their original tunes, or if they prefer the "B" sides of records (some people do like the "B" side). Or perhaps there is some other reason that we will never know. Whatever the reason, this band features no original music and the "B" sides that they play are not recognizable, not interesting, and boring. I believe that the band thinks that they have found a niche that is not being addressed by other cover bands or bands in general, but they need to realize that there is a reason that no one is doing this. It is a novelty right at first, but the novelty fades once you realize that at no time will they ever play anything that is vaguely recognizable by anyone that is well known.

As a free concert in the park, it was O-Kay. The people who attend the concerts in the park are mainly there to socialize with their friends and family, relax, eat, drink, and kick back on a summer evening. However, I don't think that this is a group that I would pay to go and see. I can think of better ways to waste money.

Joseph Vincelli

The Smoky Hill River Festival was this past weekend, June 9-12, in Oakdale Park here in Salina. The weather started out hot (99 degrees) and humid on Thursday night for The Festival Jam. A cold front went through late in the evening and by the time the park opened at 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning the temperature was a slightly chilly 51 degrees. This beautiful cool weather continued throughout the rest of the festival.

One of my favorite performers, Joseph Vincelli, was back again this year. What a treat! The first time I heard Vincelli was at an open-air concert in Wichita, KS at Bradley Fair. I happened to mention this to him when I got a chance to talk to him, and he said that he started doing concerts at Bradley Fair twelve years ago. He had just played there on Thursday before coming to Salina to do the river festival.

Vincelli did several performances during the four-day festival. I happened to catch two of them. It was refreshing to see that he changed up his performance each time he played. Adding in new songs and changing the order of the songs that he played from one performance to another. Vincelli is noted for his saxophone but he also played the flute as well, and it was lovely. He roams the crowd during his performances and really works the music for all it's worth.

During one of the songs that Vincelli played, an impromptu dance group formed.

This year, Vincelli also roamed around the grounds of the festival for impromptu performances. I was walking around and would hear that saxophone and the next thing I knew, there he was under a tree, just playing away. It was a wonderful bonus.

Joseph Vincelli has a new CD out, "The Invitation", and it is available on his website. Check it out and if you get a chance to hear him perform live, make sure that you do. He is awesome to hear and see in person.

SculptureTour Salina

SculptureTour Salina

"Welcome to SculptureTour Salina! The Lee District, in downtown Salina, has become the temporary home of 19 unique and inviting sculptures. The three block walking tour features creations from artist's across the United States."

So begins the brochure/ballot that is available everywhere in Salina. This tour will be available for viewing from May 21, 2011 through April 2012. People will vote on the art, and the artwork with the most votes will be purchased by and for the city. This process is due in part to the city art that is already available in Salina and the remarks that have been made, not always positive, regarding how the citizens of Salina feel about that city art. In April 2012, the sculptures will be changed out and another tour will begin. Another piece of art will be purchased from that tour . . .and on and on and on. The SculptureTour is slated to become an annual event.

"Back To The Blues Tour"

April 30th and Anthony Gomes was Live-at "The Santa Fe Saloon". Yes, "The Blue Goat" has a new name. The bar has been re-decorated and updated inside. The place seems more spacious and the sound booth has been moved to a better position within the bar. The bar is lighter, brighter and has a better feel. Even the crowd seemed more friendly. Of course, this was kind of a homecoming of sorts, since the last few times that Anthony has been to Salina he has played other venues. The same crowd always turns out for him. Salina is full of die-hard Anthony Gomes fans. (Anthony played Newton, Kansas a few years ago and the Salina fans followed him there. In fact, nearly the entire audience was from Salina.)

The band has changed completely and the sound reflected that change. Anthony seemed more relaxed, more himself, or what I've gotten to know of him when he's not on stage. The music was fresh and Anthony seemed to be re-vitalized. It was a great show! He played Blues, some Jazz, a little Rock-n-Roll, and even some Country tunes. And he was just himself. No pretense. It was a dynamite show! If you get to see Anthony Gomes in concert, run do not walk and purchase your ticket.

Diane Wahto

April is coming to an end, and so is the poetry series for the year, 2011. Diane Wahto was the last poet to read for the series. Once again, a nervous poet and her reading reflected that fact. It's too bad really. As I was unable to locate any of her poems to read before her performance. Apparently she has yet to publish her first book.

Being unfamiliar with her work, not having seen it on the page so that I could pause and reflect, it was difficult to understand quite a lot about her poetry. Diane even mentioned that she thought her poetry was best read from the printed page rather than read aloud. I'm afraid that in many ways I simply didn't understand her poetry. When you factor in her nerves at reading to an audience, it was a double whammy. I didn't seem to be the only one who was having trouble with her delivery and her poems.

With that said, I did enjoy one of her poems immensely. It was titled, "English Majors In Love". This poem was hilarious. I think the reason it resonated with me is due to the fact that I was an English major. The basis for the poem is that English majors tend to talk about the mechanics of the language, as though this is tremendously important, while they miss the central ideas behind what is being communicated.

I did enjoy the quips and stories that Diane told before and after the poems she read. She has a distinct way of talking and relating information to people. She was a teacher for most of her life. When she was relaxed, most at home, was when she simply spoke to the audience from her heart. I think that as she does more readings and gets her poetry out there for people to read, she will loosen up more which will provide a much more audience friendly atmosphere.

Join me again next year, in April, for a new round of poets during National Poetry Month. Spring is in full gear and soon summer will be heating up. So keep checking in here at "ReVue" for more on art and entertainment throughout the spring and summer.

HARLEY ELLIOTT

A Salina resident and poet, Harley Elliott, took the stage on Tuesday night to read from his new book, "Fugitive Histories". Harley was the third poet in the Spring Poetry Series. I believe I can safely say that a good time was had by all.

     Harley shines as a public speaker. He is at home in front of an audience and keeps the audience on the edge of their seats listening for those subtle shifts of perspective in his poems. He was able to hold my attention whether it was an introspective poem, a serious poem or something more humorous. Real feeling comes across as Harley talks and he connects with the audience on a variety of different levels. I felt like I was the only one in the room and he was speaking only to me. It is a rare talent that can do that when faced with a large audience.
     Reading from a variety of his published books, Harley read several poems from each book. My favorite and I would have to say, the audience's favorite by the crowd's reaction, was a "found poem". This was a conversation that Harley overhead while children played in his front yard inside an ornamental bush. The poem was in two parts. The first part was the conversation between the children and the second part was Harley's conversation with the children. This poem was written in such a way that I felt as though Harley was simply recalling a conversation with me, due to the way it was written. It was in prose form instead of a standard poetry form. The poem, "   " (unfortunately I cannot remember the title but I am on the hunt to find it, and I'll report back here when I do), was so funny that I laughed until I cried.
     Nothing draws a crowd in like shared emotion. Harley's poems delivered this and more. If you missed this poetry reading, you missed a lot. If you get a chance to hear Harley read his poems, make haste and go there to hear him, immediately!

NEDRA ROGERS

This week's poet was Nedra Rogers. I had checked out Nedra's book, "Soul's Night Out", at the library in preparation for this week's reading. I fell in love with her writing and her poetry really spoke to me. So, I was looking forward to hearing her read and getting a chance to meet her in person.

Nedra is very unassuming and somewhat reserved. She was nervous and her delivery didn't come off well. It was to bad, too, because her work is exceptional. It was interesting that when she simply spoke to the audience from her heart, she relaxed and was funny, interesting, and insightful. When she began to read her poetry, she tensed up and had a bad case of nerves. I think it's because her poetry is very important to her, it speaks from her heart and she wants so badly for others to understand her journey.

I had read the poems earlier and was familiar with them. It's always worthwhile to see the actual author read in person. But for those in the audience who hadn't read the poems, I believe they struggled somewhat with knowing when one poem ended and the next one began. They didn't know when to clap, when or how to react.

All in all though, it was a very unique experience and I wouldn't have missed it. Nedra is very approachable, easy to talk to, and had a smile on her face most of the time. When she read her poems the emotion was raw in her face, her voice, her demeanor. It pulled people in, made them feel comfortable and at ease. Nedra did begin to feel more at ease as the night wore on, too. I think she just needs some additional time speaking to an audience.

If you get the chance to go and hear her in person or purchase her book, I definitely would do both.

     In preparation for the first poet of the poetry series, I checked out a couple of Goldbarth's poetry books at the library. I perused them. Then I went to the reading and had a chance to talk to the poet afterwards. I'll have to say that everything about Goldbarth is consistent.
     As an aside to Goldbarth personally, before I get into my review, just because you drop the "F" bomb, a lot, that does not make you one of the hip cool kids. It just means that you didn't know enough of the language to find the appropriate words to express yourself. Also, throwing in "sex talk" just because you can when it has absolutely nothing to do with your poem, apparently you were going for some kind of shock value due to lack of content.
   That said, let me continue with my review. There is an old adage that states "if you can't say something good about someone, don't say anything at all". So with that in mind just let me say that with regard to the poetry books, the reading and the personal talk that I had with this poet, well. . . . . .
   If you get a chance to see and hear this poet at a reading, I would skip it.

April Is National Poetry Month!

     Welcome Spring! It's April and that means it's National Poetry Month. During the month of February the Salina Public Library and Moka's Bakery and Bistro feature poetry readings every Tuesday night in April. The poets being featured this year are all Kansas poets in honor of Kansas' 150th birthday.

BUDDY GUY

Buddy Guy was the headliner last Thursday night at the Stiefel Theater in Salina, KS. Moreland & Arbuckle got the crowd going, there was a short break and then Buddy Guy took the stage.

What a unique experience! Buddy Guy doesn't do any pre-set song list planning for his show which makes a concert with the performer an experience not to be missed. Every song is off the cuff and I just didn't know what to expect. Sometimes he gets it wrong, but even that becomes part of the act.

At one point, Buddy went out into the audience and up the aisle, stopping whenever their was a fan grooving to the tune or someone taking pictures. He went up the aisle and disappeared, although I could still hear him playing. The next thing I knew, he had made it upstairs and spent a considerable amount of time in the balcony. The house lights were on so the folks down front on the floor could turn around and watch him up top. Then he was back down on the floor and down the opposite aisle. It was intense!

Buddy did an echo duet with his keyboard player where the two mimiced their sound: loud or soft, length of note, and tune, back and forth between the keyboard and guitar. I know that had to have been made up on the fly and if it wasn't, wow, trying to remember the entire song would have been massive. It was awesome!

The show went on for several hours. Their were soft, sweet songs; hard, loud tunes; blues; rock; hip hop; Buddy Guy covered the spectrum. He even had his son come out and play, which was a real treat.

Another unique thing about this show, was that Buddy Guy kept asking for the house lights to be turned on so he could see the audience. He seemed to feed off the energy of the audience and when he could see the audience, he kicked it into even higher gear.

I thought Buddy Guy and his band handled the encore with similar panache. Buddy finished his final song, received a standing ovation and stayed to take his bow. Then he exited the stage, while the band played on. They played a jazzy tune, the keyboard player introduced the other members of the band and they each played a short solo. Then he mentioned Buddy Guy's name and accolades once again, which drew a round of applause. The band played on for a few more minutes. All of this while everyone in the audience is standing at attention. Finally they ended the rift they were playing and the band took their bows, exiting the stage. And the audience was satisfied and ready to head out of the auditorium.

MORELAND & ARBUCKLE

Moreland & Arbuckle opened for Buddy Guy this past Thursday night at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina, KS. I always enjoy hearing this group play. These guys are very down home and just seem like the guys next door. Their musical skills are solid. Before I knew it my toes were tapping and my hands were clapping. Of course, they played their hit "John Henry". I'm not sure why this resonates with their fans, but a Moreland & Arbuckle show wouldn't be the same without that song. They'll still be playing it for their fans 50 years from now. I hope they're prepared!

I'll have to say that I was a bit disappointed by one thing. I've heard Moreland & Arbuckle play in Oakdale Park and a variety of other venues. I'll have to say that their sound is heard best in an outdoor setting, a bar, a festival, somewhere big and bold. They have a big sound and they need a big venue.But having said that, Moreland & Arbuckle did not disappoint. The show was terrific!

After their set, they took a break and autographed merchandise for everyone who had either bought or brought something for them to sign. Moreland, Arbuckle and Brad Horner (their drummer) are all very personable and took time to sign whatever was put in front of them (and all three of them signed it), they looked every fan in the eye and took time to speak to everyone. It was a memorable moment. All three of them are a cut above the average band. This group is definitely going places.

Arlo Guthrie--- Featuring: The Burns Sisters

     Legendary. An American Icon. National Treasure. All words that I heard last night to describe Arlo Guthrie, first born son of folk singer Woody Guthrie.
   The show started with the Burns Sisters who sang three high energy songs, two of which were Woody Guthrie songs. Then Arlo Guthrie took the stage and the music and stories didn't stop for three hours.
   Guthrie opened the show by stating that he had never played the Stiefel before and after all of his years in the business that was a pretty hard thing to find, a venue that he had never played before.
     Guthrie's second song was a spirited toe tapping Leadbelly tune that I really enjoyed, and it would have been great if the Stiefel sound system hadn't been over modulated and I could have actually understood the words. The performers sang their hearts out and gave it their all but with the instrument amplification up so loud, I simply couldn't make out what they were saying. That happened to a lesser degree on another song later in the evening. Thankfully they caught this one and fixed it before the song got to far along.
   The songs ranged from spirited toe tapping folk songs to songs of introspection that drew the listener in to reflect on the deeper meaning within the tune then onto a blues number or two. There was a lovely hymn which Guthrie had written recently and the Burns Sisters did a back up vocal on that gave me chills, it was so beautiful. Whether he was playing the piano, or his collection of various guitar's, the music was inspirational and spoke to a universal place inside all of us. As a performer, Guthrie has amazing stamina.
     Guthrie also told stories from his life. I think everyone enjoys the personal story. These stories bind us together in ways that make us all a part of one family of mankind. He also spoke to current events.
     One such event, the busting up of the unions in Wisconsin, he said was a crying shame. He said that he was listening to the coverage on the radio one day and just happened to have his pocket constitution handy as he was also reading at the time. (laughter) The beginning of the constitution reads, "We the people in order to form a more perfect union. . .". Wait a minute, we're all in a union? So, does the government know this? What are the ramifications of this union busting if the entire country is in a union? There are no easy answers for that question and Guthrie didn't offer any, just food for thought.
     As a performer, Guthrie has amazing stamina. He was on fire, singing and playing for over three hours quite literally non-stop. The group took a short break at about the two hour mark, and came back with the same high energy that they had before. But when the show was over, the show was over. The crowd gave Guthrie and his fellow band members a standing ovation lobbying for an encore. Finally, somewhat reluctantly, Guthrie obliged.
   "Alice's Restaurant", Guthrie's most famous song, was not one of the songs that he sang on this night. He likened it to the movie Groundhog Day and didn't want to re-live it again and again. He informed us all that it's 30 minutes long and if the audience wanted to hear it, there were CD's available. He sang a short two verse song for his encore and let everyone join in when he sang it again. And that was the end of it. (Even with a second standing ovation).
     I took lots of photo's but unfortunately, none of them turned out. So, no photo's this time. Sorry! I promise to do better with my next review. Watch for it next week, on March 25.

The Boston Brass

Why do tuba players always seem to be the happiest members of the band? Perhaps I can answer that question by the end of my review.

     I recently had the pleasure of attending a concert by the Boston Brass at the McPherson Opera House. This group consists of five guys who play the tuba (Andrew Hitz), French horn (Chris Castellanos), trumpet (Jose Sibaga and Jeff Conner), and trombone (Lance LaDuke). There was a euphonium and even a ukulele made an appearance.
     Each member of the group got their turn on the mic to introduce the various musical selections that were going to be played, to discuss information relevant about the other members of the group, or to give a band mate a well intentioned ribbing; as Andrew Hitz (tuba) did for Jeff Conner (trumpet), the only original member of the group. Hitz mentioned something about Conner being the only original member of the group, apparently he'd run everyone else off, and now he was paying big bucks to the new members to keep them with the group.
     Each member performed a featured selection specific to their instrument. At one point, the group played “Manteca” a Latin jazz piece by Dizzy Gillespie. This piece of music features a piano that plays a rift over and over throughout the piece. This is an all brass group, no piano, so I was intrigued by how the Boston Brass would accomplish this. It began with the tuba, then the trombone joined in and finally, last but not least, the French horn joined the rift while the trumpets played the actual melody of the song. Fantastic! The audience even got into the act as LaDuke sang the Cab Calloway song, “Minnie the Moocher” and the audience joined in by singing the chorus.
     The range of musical genre’s were incredible. The Boston Brass covered chamber music, classical, big band, swing, jazz, Broadway, and even the movies. After intermission, they played the ending theme music from “The Three Amigos’ just because they liked it and it was cool! There were well known pieces and many of their own compositions.
     One of their original pieces was a song that LaDuke wrote for his mother. It began with “Y. . .is for the many years she gave you”. If you followed along with the spelling it eventually spelled out “Yo Mama”. By the time he was done with the song, “Yo Mama” had pulled in “Osama, the Dali Lama, Barack Obama, The Bahamas, and Madonna into the song. All this while LaDuke strummed a ukulele and sang accompanied by Hitz on the tuba and wondering why three of his fellow band members had left the stage.
     Needless to say, it was a delightful evening. I enjoyed myself immensely, as did the rest of the audience. I never did actually figure out why tuba players always seem to be the happiest members of the band. But Andrew Hitz did smile the entire time he played the tuba. I still haven’t figured out how he did that.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo!

     This past Tuesday evening I attended a show at The Stiefel Theatre where “Ladysmith Black Mambazo” was performing. This group is from South Africa and they sing a cappella.
     I didn’t know what to expect. I had never heard of this group before and seeing a stage with nine microphones and no instruments is unusual. The group took the stage and then the music began. The group sings in a language other than English, I believe it’s Zulu, although they did sing one of their songs in English. They introduced each song and explained what the song was about before singing it, which was very helpful.
     Music truly is a language that everyone can understand. Even though I didn’t understand the words, I really enjoyed the rhythms of their voices and the beats played out with their hands and feet. Their antics on stage brought laughter to the audience and truly reflected that though we may be bound by different cultures, regions, and ethnicity we are all one people, we are all the same.
     The name “Ladysmith Black Mambazo” came from a variety of sources. Ladysmith for the town in South Africa that the group is from; Black which is in honor of the ox which is the strongest of all the animals; and Mambazo which means axe. This group has been together since the 1960’s when the leader, Joseph Shambala first conceived the idea of a group that would spread the message of Peace, Love, and Harmony, mirroring the same sentiments that were also happening with music here in the United States.
     I found out later that this group has done a wide variety of well-known projects with well known people. It’s within the realm of possibility that every person in the United States has heard their music in one form or another; as background music in movies and videos (Eddie Murphy’s “Coming to America”, “The Lion King”, and Michael Jackson’s “Moonwalker” video); in commercials (Life Savers candy); as well as with Paul Simon on Sesame Street or performing with Stevie Wonder, Natalie Merchant or Taj Mahal, to name a few.
     Not everyone will enjoy their concert performance. If you are interested in the type of music that they sing or if you are open to new musical styles than this is the concert for you. It is a unique and different sound that will not appeal to everyone in a concert type setting even as their music is widely known in other forms which are more listener friendly, as stated above.
     I really enjoyed the concert and would recommend going to a venue to take in the uniqueness of the experience. “Ladysmith Black Mambazo” is a show worth going too. Catch it when it comes to your city.
